Pedra Cancela

Pedra Cancela is our most challenging and well-known wine project. It started over 20 years ago, by the family of João Paulo Gouveia. It came into being through the long tradition in his family and in his vineyards in Oliveira de Barreiros, in Viseu, where terroir and tradition were its foundation.

Today the Pedra Cancela project is a synergy between João Paulo and Sónia Martins. João Paulo Gouveia’s wisdom and experience in viticulture and his strong work of reinterpretation of the grape varieties in the Dão provide, from the vineyard, the excellence and difference of the Pedra Cancela wines. The Pedra Cancela wines are enhanced and complemented by Sónia Martins and her experience of more than 20 years in oenology, in various geographies. New vineyards were acquired and planted in the Dão Region, some with a distinct identity, such as the Vinha da Fidalga, in Carregal do Sal. The Pedra Cancela wine project aims to express the Dão terroir to the World and for all those passionate about the art of wine.

Pedra Cancela wines have a strong regional "terroir" identity that is elegant and internationally approachable.  They are “terroir” wines produced from traditional, native grape varieties. In some cases, these grape varietals are almost extinct. On the other hand, the vineyards where the grapes grow are of different ages for different wines, resulting in complex wines, rich in their identity.
