Alentejo
The first written documents about vines being planted in Alentejo date back to the XII century. In the immensity of low flatlands, Alentejo has some valleys and mountains: the Portel (421m), the Ossa (649m), and in the North, the S. Mamede (1025m).
It is precisely in the isolated mountains such as the Serra de São Mamede that the microclimates are most favourable to planting vines, as it provides the wines produced there with freshness, elegance, and complexity that distinguish them in the context of the region. In Portalegre, we found an area of excellence for altitude wines, a terroir that leads to graceful wines with a very strong identity.
Further south, the land is mostly at sea-level altitude, which is responsible for Mediterranean and Continental climate characteristics. The high insolation leads to differences in the maturation of the grapes, especially in the months before the harvest. This allows the grapes a desirable accumulation of residual sugars and colouring pigments on their skin. The vines are mostly located on a geological substrate of granite, schist, limestone, and clay.
